Life is beautiful – but it sure can throw a lot of punches! 

Your emotional wellness is strongly correlated with your ability to manage stress.

As individuals, our ability to cope with difficult times/challenges and handle the hard parts of life has an incredible impact on our health. 

Unresolved and/or long-term stress can result in numerous health issues (mental health issues, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity to name a few!)

These five tips can help you increase/protect your emotional wellness when it comes to stressful problems that life throws your way. 

👊 Put it into perspective. 

Is this issue life or death? No? Then you WILL be okay. Instead of focusing on how negative something is – focus on how you can adapt to the change. 

👊 Don’t take it personally. 

It is easy to feel as though life is overloading you specifically with obstacles. The truth is – life is inherently full of obstacles. 

👊 Choose to grow from challenges. 

A life without obstacles would also prevent us from growing as people. As goes the Moliere quote, “The greater the obstacle, the greater the glory in overcoming it.”  

👊 Offer grace to others. 

Your emotional wellness is also influenced by how you treat others and your patterns of laying blame. We are all people and we all drop the ball sometimes. Consciously choosing to offer grace to others in difficult situations will decrease the negativity and allow you the possibility to create a satisfying experience of resolution with others. (I.e. When the washing machine dies after you repeatedly asked your husband to service it and he didn’t. You can get mad. Or you can offer grace and work to solve the problem together.)

 👊 Learn to take a break from the issue if you need to. 

Some things in life are incredibly stressful and our bodies were built to release adrenaline and cortisol when we are stressed. It can be difficult to handle life’s stressors with a calm, clear demeanor when our body is throwing us into fight or flight mode. So when you find that you are not able to “roll with the punches” on a challenge – take a break. Take a walk. Take a breath. And then come back and build an action plan. 

I want to share a personal take on emotional wellness that help me to see obstacles in a different light.

I have been having lots of inner obstacles and I just couldn’t get over one particular obstacle.  I felt like a flake. I felt that I just couldn’t really do this work due to this obstacle of mine. I let my inner fear get the best of me. I let my past predict my day.

I knew that I needed to take care of my emotional wellness.  One morning during my morning prayers, I came across that passage from the Diary of St. Faustina and I knew that I had to take it to heart so that my emotional wellness could heal from this obstacle. 

I closed my eyes and read this over and over.  

Be courageous.  Do not fear apparent obstacles. Fix my face upon the cross. I will be victorious.

Then I felt this heaviness come off my shoulders. I knew that I needed not to fear this obstacle but to use the obstacle to be victorious.

I just didn’t know how. 

Yet, God had send me the how in a form of a book. On the same day of reading this passage of Blessed Mother, I received a book called, The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday. I had to laugh at the humor of it all happening on the same day.

Ryan Holiday, the author, brings in Marcus Aurelius who knew how to overcome obstacles, like a Roman Emperor’s 

“Objective judgment, now at this very moment. Unselfish actions, now at this very moment. Willing acceptance – now at this very moment – of all external events. That’s all you need.”

Ryan explains that overcoming obstacles is a discipline of 3 How’s;

  1. How you look at the specific problem.
  2. How is your attitude or approach; then the energy and creativity with which you actively break them down and turn them into opportunities.
  3. How you cultivate and maintain an inner will that allows you to handle defeat and difficulty.

Perception, Action, and the Will.

 What matters most is not what these obstacles are but how we see them, how we react to them, and whether we keep our composure. – Ryan Holiday. (I shared more on the podcast)

So my dear reader, take care of your emotional wellness by facing the cross with courage. Don’t fear the apparent obstacles for with Christ, you will be victorious!
