Sunday with the Saints on Catholic Fit Moms for Life

St. Valentine’s Day is another feast day in the Church that the pagan world has taken back today.

During the Middle Ages, the Church took St. Valentine’s name and used it to overpower the pagan holiday, Lupercalia. Lupercalia is a licentious Roman fertility feast day on February 15th. The Church used St. Valentine’s death, the eve before, to replace this pagan celebration.

Now, the pagan world has removed the word saint from it, calls it Valentine’s Day, and sells thousands of flowers, roses, chocolate, and so on.

However, we can take back this feast by passing down to our children the history of this saint, who died for the love of others, for the love of the Church and Christ.

St. Valentine was a Roman priest martyred during Claudius’ reign. He was martyred for marrying Christian couples, which was outlaw at that time. St. Valentine was a close friend of Claudius. Being a close friend, he wanted to bring Christ to him. Valentine loved the faith and his friend, Claudius.

However, Claudius was blind to his prideful ways, had sentenced Valentine to death, commanding him to renounce his faith or be beaten with clubs and beheaded.

But St. Valentin’s love for Christ and Church was more than his own life, winning him martyred sainthood.

How many of us can say that we genuinely love others, love them to bring them to Christ?

We know that the promoters of abortion do not know love. They don’t know Christ. How do we love them? How do we bring them to the love of Christ?

This is no easy task. We might not even know someone who is pro-choice in real life, but we know they are out there. We can bring the love of Christ through our prayers and fasting.
