Sunday with the Saints on Catholic Fit Moms for Life

We have just finished up the Month of Black History in February and entering now the month of Women’s History in the United States.

St. Katharine Drexel is a perfect person to learn from for both those history months.

This American born saint is a beautiful example of courage, strength, and wisdom living out the merciful love of God.

Though she was born into wealth, her parents showed her that with that wealth one has even more responsibility to society. They opened up their house 3 days a week to the poor! No questions ask. You need food, comfort, you can come inside their home.

They also taught her above all, doing the will of God brings more joy and riches than having real wealth. She knew that she didn’t want to marry which doing so shock the High Society at that time, even having a newspaper headline on her called; “Gives Up Seven Million!”.

With the inspiration of the Pope and graces from St. Joseph, she instead started an order, Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored. By the time of her death in 1955, she had established 50 missions for Indians in 16 states, Catholic schools for blacks with 40 mission centers and 23 rural schools in 13 states.

I happen to live close to one of her greatest achievements, the establishment of the first Catholic University for blacks in New Orleans, Xavier University.

Even with all of this merciful work, the opposition from Segregationists was strong enough to even burned one of her schools back in Pennsylvania.

St. Katharine is just a beautiful model to living out the merciful love of God for all humans no matter your color!
